Relationships
Those Close To Us
Regal is a pretty stony guy. But underneath that solid exterior, he's compassionate and loyal to a fault. His interactions with the other characters wax and wane as the game progresses, bring him closer to some and pushing him farther from others.
SPOILER ALERT! You have been warned.
Lloyd Irving: Regal and Lloyd seem to have a brotherly relationship. Lloyd considers Regal an older brother, and Regal considers Lloyd a younger one. When Lloyd gets flustered and distracted, Regal is always there to gently pull him back into reality, and help him refocus himself.
Genis Sage: Hmm, Regal doesn't interact with Genis all that much. The words they do exchange are courteous and friendly. I think that Genis even looks up to Regal, but not so much as a father figure. Just as someone who is strong and intelligent, maybe something Genis aspires to be.
Raine Sage: Raine is the other voice of reason opposite Regal. Their interactions are professional, and even scholarly. Regal seems to enjoy listening to Raine's random lectures, but prehaps is a bit startled by her extreme enthusiasm for relics?
Colette Brunel: Other than the plot to kidnap Colette, Regal doesn't really interact with her much. As tolerant as Regal can be, I have the suspicion that she tends to irk him with her *ahem* naievity. I do believe that he respects her as a Chosen, but I don't sense any other sort of attachment to her than that.
Zelos Wilder: Regal has known Zelos since he was a small child. Because of this, Zelos knows of Regal's true status and past. Eventhough Regal's been absent for most of Zelos' life due to his incarceration, he still kept up with Zelos' growth. Regal even knows of "the Chosen's debauchery" from gossiping prison guards (I thought this was funny). Zelos jokes (or tries to joke) with Regal, as he does everyone. Despite this, I sense an underlying deep respect he has for Regal. He even tried to change the subject when the group was about to find out about Alicia's killer, which led me to think that in a way he was protecting Regal from a touchy subject. Perhaps it's a nobility sticking with nobility thing?
Sheena Fujibayashi: I think that Regal has a similar relationship with Sheena that he does with Lloyd, minus the brotherly love part. She gets along well with him, and like Lloyd, didn't seem to have a problem with him when they found out he was a criminal.
Presea Combatir: Of all the main characters, Regal has the closest ties to Presea. The main one is that he and her younger sister, Alicia, were lovers at one time. Another is that the Lezareno Company was partially responsible for her death (by Lezareno, I mean George, the butler/manager). Yet another tie he has with Presea is her mother. It's very vague, but in one Z-skit, Regal cooks a dish for the group, and they are all commenting on it's fantastic flavor. Regal explains that the recipe was handed to him by a dear friend and collegue. Presea then makes a comment that it tastes like "Mommy's flavor". I have yet to understand how Regal could know Presea's mother, but apparently he did. Regal is very protective of Presea. I believe this has to do with the heavy guilt he feels for what happened to Alicia. Presea resembles Alicia so much, that she is basically a daily reminder of his crime, which I bet is a hard burden to carry. Before you learn of Regal's true identity and his ties to Presea, his interest in her is unusual. The whole group is constantly wondering why he seems so interested in the little girl. In another Z-Skit, Genis gets a bit jealous, thinking that Regal may possibly have a crush on Presea (it's a cute scene, really). We know this, of course, is not true in the least. To me, Regal sees Presea as someone he needs to watch over and protect, almost like a sister or possibly even a daughter.
